2007- What needs doing?

We have just returned from a moving trip to Africa, where we visited all of the possible project locations to start establishing what needs doing before we send you out there!
The purpose of this trip was to establish, with the help of the local community, what urgently needs doing.

With the help of the local residents we have developed project ideas that will help the local communities to grow and improve their lives. From building classrooms to teaching English there's lots to be done to bring their lives up to a standard we take for granted!

All the work you do will directly help the local community- so it's time to get out there and make a real difference!

As much as we would like to we can't help everyone but we can make a difference.

The quality of the postal service within Tanzania is at times a little less than perfect.  However, airmail to Europe will usually only take 5 days.

Card phones are being installed in many towns, though they are still hard to find in more remote areas.  Pay phones in post offices, which you use through an operator, are common.

Tanzania’s country code from the UK is +00 255.  From Tanzania the outgoing international code for the UK is 00 44. International calls must go through the operator. 

E-Mail

Public internet access is available in cyber cafes or internet cafes in some of the larger towns and cities.  Moshi and Arusha have internet cafes.  Generally you can pay somewhere between US$0.50 and US$5 per hour for the use of a PC.  The expedition leader will make sure you get to an internet café. 

Email is faster, cheaper and usually more reliable than telephone or faxes.  The most straightforward way of sending and receiving email whilst away is to open a free internet account with providers such as Hotmail or Yahoo.  You can then access your email from anywhere in the world.

Bartering is very common.  In markets or souvenir shops the owner will have priced his goods in the expectation of being bartered down.  The original price could therefore be anything up to twice as much as the good’s value.  Bartering is fun if you can get over your English reserve.  But remember, the Tanzanians do it all the time and they are good at it.

Do not flash your money around.  As we have already said, Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world and your thousands of Tsh are beyond the wildest dreams of many of the people around you.

ATM’s are rare but they do exist.  It may be possible to find an ATM in Arusha, which you might visit at the start of your safari journey, or to buy provisions for project work.  You should not rely on being able to access money this way.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards are accepted in many places in Tanzania, especially the more expensive places.  However, it s unlikely that you will be making purchases for which you will need a credit card.  They are though  a safe way to carry an emergency “fund”. 

Be aware that if you are making a purchase with one you are likely to be charged a hefty commission charge.

Travellers Cheques are very easily changed and there are banks and hotels in Moshi which will change them.  The rates of exchange will vary greatly, so do not just use the first place you find. 

Travellers Cheques are a very safe way of carrying money – please remember to leave the information about numbers etc with your parents in case the cheques are lost. 

It is better to have at least some of your travellers cheques in smaller denominations as a little goes a long way in Tanzania and if you carry larger denominations you may find yourself stuck with large amounts of the local currency when you leave.
